Discipline

What is canyoning?

Canyoning is an outdoor activity that involves descending the beds of narrow river gorges, known as canyons. This discipline combines several practices: aquatic hiking, swimming, jumping into natural pools, sliding down polished rock slides, and abseiling down waterfalls. It's a complete adventure that works the entire body in a spectacular environment.

The gorges carved by water over millennia offer breathtaking landscapes: sculpted cliffs, turquoise pools, and roaring waterfalls. Accessible to everyone with professional guidance, canyoning provides unique sensations. Every jump, every natural waterslide, every abseil under a waterfall becomes a memorable moment.

In the Alpes-Maritimes, Ailéments offers eight tours led by a DEJEPS-qualified instructor registered with SNAPEC. From a fun family descent through the Gorges du Loup to 65-metre abseils at the Cascades de Courmes, each canyon reveals a unique landscape nestled between the Mediterranean and the Alpine peaks.

What is canyoning and how is it done?
Canyoning involves descending through gorges by combining walking, swimming, jumps, natural slides, and abseiling. Supervised by a qualified instructor, you'll navigate spectacular canyons with all equipment provided. No prior experience is necessary for beginner routes.
Do you need to be able to swim to go canyoning?
Yes, knowing how to swim is compulsory for canyoning. You must be able to swim at least 25 metres unaided. Some sections require swimming in deep pools, even if the instructor is always present to guide you.
From what age can you go canyoning?
Half-day packages (Gours du Ray, Gorges du Loup) are available for children aged 8 and over. Full-day packages (Courmes, Riolan, Aiglun, etc.) are for those aged 12 and over. For the adventure courses, the maximum age is 60. Children must be able to swim.
Which canyon to choose for a first time?
For a first experience, we recommend Gour du Ray, our signature canyon. Its turquoise natural pools, fun slides and optional jumps offer the perfect balance between thrills and accessibility. The Gorges du Loup are also ideal for starting out as a family.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Canyoning is dependent on weather conditions and water levels. In the event of a storm or flood risk, we will postpone your trip free of charge to a date that suits you. We monitor the forecasts and will notify you the day before if necessary. Your safety is our top priority.
What equipment is needed for a canyoning trip?
All canyoning equipment is provided by Ailéments: a neoprene wetsuit, helmet, harness and safety gear. All you need to bring is a pair of closed-toe shoes such as trainers (which may get wet), a swimsuit and a towel. A state-certified guide will accompany you on every route and provide a full briefing before setting off. You don’t need any prior technical experience, whether for abseiling, jumps or slides.
Can one practice canyoning in the Alpes-Maritimes all year round?
The canyoning season generally runs from spring to autumn, depending on river levels. Summer remains the most popular time for canyoning thanks to the pleasant water temperatures and long days. Spring and autumn offer spectacular scenery and stronger currents, ideal for thrill-seekers. Ailéments is open all year round except in January: contact our team to find out the best times to visit depending on the canyon you choose.
What are the prices for canyoning?
Canyoning prices at Ailéments start from €55 per person for an introductory trip in the Gorges du Loup, and from €80 per person for a challenging route in the Alpes-Maritimes. Special rates are available for groups, hen parties and stag parties. All equipment (wetsuit, helmet, safety gear) and supervision by a qualified guide are included in every trip. Payment is made on site after the activity.
What is the difference between a half-day and a full day?
The half-day option is perfect for a first-time experience or for families: allow about 2 to 3 hours of activity on accessible routes with jumps, slides, and abseils. The full-day option is for the more adventurous who wish to explore more challenging canyons, with a longer approach walk and a varied aquatic route in a protected natural environment. In both cases, all equipment is provided and a qualified instructor will accompany you.
