From what age can you go canyoning as a family?

A child can go down a canyon with us from age 8, not before, even if they swim well. As we also offer paragliding, here is what each person can do according to their age.

What each person can do according to their age, in canyoning and in paragliding

Under age 5No outingNo flight
Ages 5 and 6No outingChild flight €100
Age 7No outingAscending flight €140
Ages 8 to 15Half-day €55Ascending flight €140

Is your child 6 or 7? They will not go down a canyon with us, but they can fly in tandem with an instructor: see our paragliding for kids page.

Does your teenager want more thrills? Before 16, they do the same half days as the rest of the family, with jumps of up to 10 metres if they feel like it. The sporty canyons then open up as full days, from 16 to 70. We offer outings, not canyoning courses.

Requirements

The conditions for a child to go down a canyon

No experience is required: your child must be 8, be able to swim and be willing to put their head under water.

  • Being able to swim is compulsory: some sections are swum, through deep pools
  • Being able to walk: up to 30 minutes uphill on the way back, depending on the canyon
  • Coming with a responsible adult, or with a written and signed parental authorisation
  • No heart problems or epilepsy: these are contraindications

When you book, you give each person's age, weight, height and shoe size: this is how we prepare your child's equipment in the right size. Depending on the route, we take their level, height, weight and age into account.

The routes

Which canyon should you choose with children?

Three canyons are open to families, at the same price. For a first descent, we recommend the Gours du Ray. The choice is made when you book, depending on the weather, and we most often head to the Gorges du Loup.

The Gours du Ray and the Gorges du Loup are two canyons in the Loup valley; Cramassouri is in the Tinée valley. Details of each descent are on our Gorges du Loup canyoning, Gours du Ray and Cramassouri pages. All our routes, sporty ones included, are on the canyoning in the 06 page.

Jumps and abseils

If your child is afraid of jumps or abseiling

Your child only jumps if they feel like it: on our three canyons, jumps are always optional.

  • The instructor goes first on every obstacle and adapts the pace to the children
  • One instructor leads 8 people at most
  • At the Gours du Ray and in the Gorges du Loup, abseils can be avoided
  • At Cramassouri, the route ends with a 10-metre abseil

If abseiling worries your child, choose the Gours du Ray or the Gorges du Loup, and say so when you book. For the details of a first outing, step by step, see our beginner canyoning page.

And then

The rest of the day in the Loup valley

A flight in the morning at Gréolières, a canyon in the afternoon: that is our paragliding and canyoning combo, at €190 per person, from age 8, even for two: for the canyon, you then join a group already running. In a combo, a child aged 5 to 7 can fly without doing the canyon.

Our customers usually stay for the day: swimming and walking in the Gorges du Loup, the village of Gourdon, walks on the Cheiron.

On holiday on the coast? Driving times are on our canyoning in Nice page. If you are staying near the calanques, see our canyoning in Cassis page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about family canyoning

Minimum age, 6 or 7 years old, 10 years old, difficulty, helmet, teenagers, pregnancy.

What is the minimum age for canyoning?

At Ailéments, the minimum age is 8, for a half day, on our three family canyons: Gours du Ray, Gorges du Loup and Cramassouri. The sporty canyons, as full days, are for ages 16 to 70.

Can you go canyoning as a family with 8-year-old children on the French Riviera?

Yes. In the hinterland, we take children from age 8 on half-day canyons, 2 h 30 on site, with a State-qualified instructor for 8 people at most. Jumps are always optional, and abseils can be avoided at the Gours du Ray and in the Gorges du Loup. Your child must be able to swim and be willing to put their head under water.

Is it possible to go canyoning from age 6 or at age 7?

Not with us: the minimum is 8, even for a child who swims well, and it is checked when you book. At 5 and 6, your child can take a Child flight in paragliding; at 7, an Ascending flight. Under 5, we offer neither canyoning nor flights.

Is canyoning suitable for a 10-year-old child?

Yes, on our three half-day canyons, under the same conditions as at 8: being able to swim, being willing to put their head under water and being able to walk. Their equipment is prepared according to their age, weight and height, and they decide on their own jumps.

Is canyoning difficult?

Our three family canyons require no experience. The effort is mainly the walking, up to 30 minutes uphill on the way back, and the swimming in the pools. The sporty canyons, reserved for ages 16 and over, require good physical fitness.

Is a helmet provided for a child?

Yes. Each participant receives an approved helmet, a harness, a 5 mm neoprene wetsuit and neoprene socks, included in the price. The weight and height given when booking are used to prepare their equipment.

Is there a canyoning course for teenagers?

We offer outings, not courses. Before 16, a teenager does the half day; from 16, they can go down our sporty canyons as a full day, at €80 per person. A minor must be accompanied by a responsible adult or provide a written and signed parental authorisation.

Can you go canyoning while pregnant?

No. Our terms and conditions of sale state that canyoning and paragliding are contraindicated for pregnant women.
