What is canyoning?

Canyoning means going down a river through a gorge, on foot, swimming and sliding.

You walk along the stream bed, swim in the pools, slide down natural waterslides, jump if you feel like it and go down the vertical sections on an abseil rope. Your instructor goes first on every obstacle and shows you how to do it.

Our discovery canyoning is designed for a first time: a half-day on a canyon for beginners, an approach walk of 20 minutes at most and all the equipment provided.

The video shows one of our outings in the Gorges du Loup. This guide then tells you the conditions, which canyon to choose, what you have to do, how the outing goes, what to bring and how much it costs.

Accessibility

Can you go canyoning with no experience?

Yes: no experience is required on our beginner routes. Here is what you need.

Being able to swim

This is compulsory, with no certificate required, because some sections are swum in deep pools.

Being at least 8 years old

Our beginner canyons are open from age 8. The sporty full-day canyons are for ages 16 and over.

Being able to walk for 20 minutes

The approach walk takes 20 minutes at most to reach the start of the canyon. You then need to be able to follow the descent.

No equipment needed

Wetsuit, helmet and harness are provided. Your instructor explains the basic moves before setting off.

Our advice

Which canyon should you choose for your first canyoning trip?

For a first canyon, we recommend the Gours du Ray: turquoise pools, waterslides, optional jumps and abseils you can avoid. Our three beginner routes are the same price, from age 8.

The canyon is decided when you book, depending on the weather. Our Gorges du Loup canyoning is the one we do most often, and Cramassouri takes you into the Tinée valley.

Jumps and fear of heights

Jumps and abseils: what you can avoid

Jumps are what beginners fear most, especially those with a fear of heights. They are always optional: if you prefer, you go around them.

On our beginner routes, jumps go up to 10 metres. A canyoning trip with a 20 m jump is not for a first time, and you will not find one on these routes.

The abseils can be avoided at the Gours du Ray and in the Gorges du Loup (6 metres in the Gorges du Loup). This is not the case in every canyon: if heights worry you, choose one of these two and tell us when you book.

In these two canyons, you therefore decide obstacle by obstacle, at your own level.

Learning

How do you learn canyoning?

We recommend learning with an instructor. With a state-qualified instructor, you learn the jump position, rope handling and controlled sliding in the field, in a group of 8 people at most.

Once you feel at ease, you can move on to our sporty full-day canyons, from age 16.
