Canyoning Antibes

Canyoning Antibes - From the ramparts to the canyon in 45 minutes

There is no canyon in Antibes: from the ramparts of Old Antibes, allow about 45 minutes by road to reach the first of ours, in the Gorges du Loup. You go down it with a state-qualified instructor: half day at €55 from age 8, full day at €80 from age 16, equipment included. +1291 reviews 5/5.

Staying between Cap d'Antibes, Old Antibes and Juan-les-Pins? Our canyoning trips take place in the hinterland, and the first canyon, in the Gorges du Loup, is about 45 minutes away via Valbonne.

Once past the ramparts and Port Vauban, head for the Préalpes d'Azur: natural slides, always optional jumps and turquoise pools, from the Gours du Ray, which we recommend for a first canyon, to more committing descents.

On site, you go down with a state-qualified guide from Ailéments, a small family business since 2013: 8 people at most per instructor, no experience needed. You simply have to be able to swim and be willing to put your head under water.

Every trip is all-inclusive: 5 mm wetsuit, helmet, harness, guiding and insurance.

The canyons

Where can you go canyoning from Antibes?

In the hinterland, north-west of Antibes. We offer eight canyons, all presented on our canyoning in the Alpes-Maritimes page: three as a half day from age 8, five as a full day from age 16.

To start with, we recommend the Gours du Ray: its jumps are optional and its 4 m abseil can be avoided. The Gorges du Loup canyon, near Gourdon, has abseils of 6 m at most, which can also be avoided. The Cramassouri canyon, in the Tinée valley, ends with a 10 m abseil.

Looking for something more committing? From age 16, the full day takes in the Cascades de Courmes and their 60 m abseil, the Riolan and its two rock amphitheatres, the Clue d'Aiglun, the Saint-Auban canyon or the Imberguet, in spring only.

  • Slides in natural rock and optional jumps, from 2 to 10 m, into turquoise pools
  • Abseils alongside the waterfalls, up to 6 m on the discovery route
  • Swimming between the limestone walls of the Préalpes d'Azur
  • Short approach walk through the Mediterranean forest: 20 minutes at most on the family routes

The canyon is set when you book, according to the option chosen and the weather forecast. The day before, we check the water flow and the sky, then a text message confirms the trip, with the GPS point for the meeting place.

The season runs from 1 April to 31 October, with water at 19 °C in summer; June to September is the most pleasant time. Too much water after a storm, and the trip is postponed free of charge: our instructors know the catchment area and choose the right canyon at the right time. The same gorges also welcome holidaymakers from Cannes and Nice.

Getting here from Antibes

From Antibes, Juan-les-Pins or Valbonne: how do you get there?

From the centre of Antibes, the road goes via Valbonne: allow about 45 minutes to the Gorges du Loup. From Juan-les-Pins, the time is the same. If you are in Valbonne, you are already on the way; from Cagnes-sur-Mer, you go up through the Loup valley, as you do from Nice.

For the Loup canyon, we meet in the gorge, on the D6, once through the tunnel. For the Gours du Ray, it is after the village of Gréolières, on the road to Andon; Gréolières is 45 minutes from Antibes.

Including the drive, a half day in the gorge comes to about 4 hours: 45 minutes there, 2 h 30 on site, 45 minutes back. For a full day, allow 4 hours on site and bring a picnic; the drive then depends on the canyon.

Without a car, you will need a ride-hailing service: we do not run a shuttle from Antibes.

Your day

A day in the Loup valley

Driving up from Antibes for a canyon means treating yourself to the hinterland: our customers come for the day and make the most of the valley.

Around the canyon, in the valley

Swim in the Gorges du Loup, walk on the Cheiron or in the Monts d'Azur reserve, then tour the villages: Gourdon, Bar-sur-Loup, Tourrettes-sur-Loup or Pont du Loup.

For a meal, ask us for an address on the day of your trip: we are happy to suggest a table in Gréolières or Coursegoules.

And in the evening, in Antibes

Back on the coast, you still have time to stroll through Old Antibes, at the foot of the ramparts, or to walk along Port Vauban.

The Tire-Poil path, on Cap d'Antibes, can wait until the next day: allow about two hours for the walk.

In the canyon

To leave with your own footage, the video of your trip is optional at €30, transferred to your phone.

Families and groups

With the family or friends, setting off from Antibes

With children, from age 8

The half day is open from age 8, if the child can swim and feels at ease in the water. Every jump can be avoided, and your instructor adapts the pace to the youngest.

Before booking, read our family canyoning page; for a very first time, also see beginner canyoning.

With friends, hen or stag party

From 5 people, a trip opens on the date of your choice; from 15 July to 31 August, 4 are enough, provided a 5th person signs up. If there are two or three of you, we place you on a trip that is already organised. One instructor leads 8 people at most.

A hen or stag party can also be celebrated in a canyon, as a private trip: see our hen and stag parties page.

On the day

How does a canyoning trip work?

A simple route, supervised from start to finish by your state-qualified guide, in four stages.

Meeting point & equipment

We meet at the point sent by text message. Your instructor equips you: 5 mm wetsuit, helmet, harness.

Safety briefing

How to position yourself to jump, what the descender is for, how to use signals in the canyon: everything is explained in simple words.

Approach walk

A short path to the start, time to warm up and admire the Préalpes d'Azur.

Descent and return

Slides, optional jumps and abseils at the group's pace, then back to the car park and a debrief.

Nothing is imposed, everything is supervised: your instructor goes first at each obstacle, and you decide on every jump. At the Gours du Ray and in the Gorges du Loup, the abseils can be avoided too; elsewhere, this is not always possible.

Come rested and hydrated, with something to snack on for a full day. Swimwear goes under the wetsuit; add old closed-toe trainers and dry clothes for afterwards. No suitable shoes? We can lend you some free of charge. It is all in our guide on what to wear for canyoning. If the water worries you or you have a health problem, talk to us before you set off.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about canyoning in Antibes

Canyons, drive, meeting point, river hiking, prices, age, swimming, safety, equipment, season, duration, combo.

Where can you go canyoning near Antibes?

In the hinterland. The first of our canyons is in the Gorges du Loup, about 45 minutes from Antibes; the Gours du Ray and the Cascades de Courmes are in the same valley. The others are in the Estéron (Riolan, Clue d'Aiglun, Saint-Auban), the Tinée (Cramassouri) and the Vésubie (Imberguet).

Is there a canyon in Antibes?

No: Antibes is by the sea, and you have to go up into the hinterland to find canyons. All our descents take place in the Alpes-Maritimes, at least a 45-minute drive away.

How long is the drive from Antibes or Juan-les-Pins?

About 45 minutes to the Gorges du Loup, via Valbonne, from Antibes as from Juan-les-Pins. The Gours du Ray is after the village of Gréolières, itself 45 minutes from Antibes. From Valbonne, you are already on the way.

Where is the meeting point?

In the gorge, after the D6 tunnel, for the Loup canyon; after the village of Gréolières, on the road to Andon, for the Gours du Ray. We send you the exact GPS point by text message the day before.

Can you go river hiking near Antibes?

No, that is not what we do: we offer canyoning. If you prefer not to jump, our half day is still open from age 8: optional jumps, slides and swimming in the pools, with abseils that can be avoided at the Gours du Ray and in the Gorges du Loup.

How do you get there without a car?

You will need a ride-hailing service: the meeting point is on site, and we do not run a shuttle from Antibes.

How much does a canyoning trip near Antibes cost?

Allow €55 per person for a discovery half day (2 h 30, equipment included), from age 8, or €50 from 5 people. The sporty full day costs €80 (from age 16), a private trip €400 or €640, the video €30 as an option and the paragliding + canyoning combo €190. Nothing to pay in advance: you pay on site, after the activity.

At what age can you start canyoning?

From age 8 on the introductory route, as a half day: the child must feel at ease in the water. Full-day routes are open to ages 16 to 70.

Do you need to be able to swim to go canyoning?

Yes. No certificate required, but you must be able to swim and be willing to put your head under water, because several pools are crossed by swimming. If you are not at ease in the water, it is better to choose another activity.

Is canyoning a dangerous activity?

It is an outdoor sport, with real risks. A state-qualified guide limits them without removing them: the water flow and the weather are checked before each departure, the anchors checked, the equipment inspected. The details are on our canyoning safety page.

What equipment should I bring?

We provide the 5 mm neoprene wetsuit, helmet, harness, lanyard, descender and canyoning bag. Bring swimwear, old closed-toe trainers, which will get soaked, a towel and dry clothes for the journey back.

What footwear should you wear for canyoning?

Closed sports shoes that you do not mind getting wet, no sandals or flip-flops: the rock is sometimes slippery. If you have no suitable shoes, ask us: the loan is free.

When is the best time for canyoning near Antibes?

Our trips run from 1 April to 31 October. The most pleasant time is June to September, with water at 19 °C in summer; between seasons, the neoprene wetsuit makes up for the cooler temperatures.

How long does canyoning last?

As a half day, 2 h 30 on site (equipment, approach walk, descent, return). As a full day, 4 hours on site, with a picnic to bring. Add the drive from Antibes.

Can canyoning be combined with other activities?

Yes. The paragliding + canyoning combo (€190) combines a flight and a descent on the same day. Also take the opportunity to visit Gourdon and the villages of the valley.

Best day out, we did paragliding and then the canyoning. Great value for money and our instruction was excellent we always felt very safe. I have done canyoning in a few countries and this was the best I have done by far. It was a beautiful gorge and had the clearest water. We would book again if we ever came back to the area for sure!
