Visit the hilltop village of Gourdon: a medieval gem high above the Loup valley

Gourdon is best explored on foot, winding its cobbled streets between stone houses. The village is compact, but every nook and cranny holds a surprise: a plunging view over the valley, a sculpted façade, an arched passageway that opens onto the sky.

Gourdon Castle and its gardens

At the top of the village stands the Château de Gourdon, a former stronghold dating back to the 12th century. Its gardens, designed in the spirit of formal gardens, offer an exceptional panoramic view of the coast and the peaks of the hinterland. The château is privately owned, but the esplanade and surrounding viewpoint remain accessible and are one of the highlights of the visit.

Medieval streets, church and Place Victoria

On the way back down to the heart of the village, you will pass the sober, authentic church of Saint-Pierre before reaching the Place Victoria. It's from this esplanade that the panorama is most spectacular: on a clear day, the view stretches all the way to the Mediterranean, with the Gorges du Loup below.

The narrow streets of Gourdon are also home to a number of craft shops, including perfume and glass workshops. Allow between 1? and 2 hours for a tour of the village, more if you take the time to browse the shops and enjoy the views.

How to get to Gourdon and practical advice

Gourdon is located in the hinterland of Grasse, in the Alpes-Maritimes department. The village can only be reached by road, via a winding climb that is already part of the experience.

Access by car from Nice, Grasse and the Côte d'Azur

From Nice, allow around 45 minutes on the Route du Loup. From Grasse, access is quicker: around 20 minutes. From Cannes, allow 40 minutes via Grasse. The itinerary is well signposted, and the road offers fine views over the valley.

Parking: where to park in Gourdon?

Parking is a particular problem in Gourdon. The car park below the village has limited spaces, and in high season (July-August), it can be full by late morning. Our advice: arrive before 10am or visit during the low season and at weekends.

Recommended equipment

Comfortable shoes are all you need to visit the village. If you're planning an outdoor activity (hiking, canyoning, paragliding), don't forget closed shoes, a windbreaker and sunglasses. For canyoning and paragliding, all technical equipment is provided by Ailéments.

When to visit Gourdon The best seasons for your programme

Gourdon can be visited all year round, but the best time depends on what you want to do.

Spring and autumn: the best compromise

From March to May and September to November, temperatures are mild, crowds are moderate and conditions are ideal for outdoor activities. This is the period we recommend if you want to combine a visit to the village with outdoor activities such as paragliding or canyoning.

Summer: unobstructed views but crowds in the village

In July and August, the views are magnificent and the long days make it possible to combine everything. On the other hand, the village is very busy and parking becomes a challenge. It's best to visit in the mornings and book your outdoor activity in advance.

Winter: a peaceful village

From November to March, Gourdon is at peace. The village is open and the winter panoramas have a special charm. Paragliding is still possible, depending on the weather, but canyoning is closed in winter. A 30-minute drive away, the Gréolières 1400 allows you to combine skiing and hang-gliding on the same day. Ailéments operates all year round except in January. Each activity is confirmed the evening before at 8pm, depending on the weather conditions.
