Flying from Gourdon is like taking off from a natural balcony: the village overlooks the Gorges du Loup by several hundred metres, facing the sea. Depending on the weather, we take off from Embarnier, just above, or from Gréolières for longer flights. South-facing, with steady breezes and over 250 flyable days per year spring in this corner one of the most reliable in the Southern Alps.
And the village is well worth lingering in: medieval alleyways, a château and gardens, artisan and perfumer workshops, and a breathtaking panorama over the entire bay. The neighbours are not to be outdone: people also come to fly from Bar-sur-Loup.
The view alone makes the trip worthwhile: beneath the wing, the Gorges du Loup and their sheer cliffs, the wild plateaus of the Cheiron, the coastline in the distance and the first peaks of the Mercantour. A striking contrast between sea and mountains, which is particularly striking as you take off. And as the area is brimming with things to see — a listed village, gorges, waterfalls — this first flight easily turns into a day-long getaway.
In practical terms, the choice between Embarnier and Gréolières is made at the last minute, depending on the day’s wind direction: Embarnier, just above the village, for a quick take-off with a bird’s-eye view of the gorges; Gréolières, ten minutes away, for the greatest elevation gain and the longest flights. This flexibility, unique to schools that operate across several launch sites, guarantees the best possible flying window on every outing — a luxury that few single-site locations can offer. This is also what makes Gourdon a destination in a class of its own: in a single day, you can stroll through the medieval streets in the morning, take to the skies in the afternoon above the valley you’ve just admired from below, and then savour a sunset over the bay. You don't need to be sporty or a daredevil to give it a go: the instructor handles the entire flight, from take-off to landing, and it only takes a few paces of running to take off.
