For a first time, with the family or with friends, three routes: the Gorges du Loup, near Gourdon, with abseils of up to 6 m; the Gours du Ray, which we recommend for a first canyon; the Cramassouri, in the Tinée valley. In the Loup canyon and at the Gours du Ray, the abseils can be avoided.

For a more committing full day, from age 16: the Courmes Waterfalls and their 60 m abseil, the Riolan and its two rock amphitheatres, the Clue d'Aiglun, the Saint-Auban canyon, or the Imberguet in spring.

  • Slides carved by the water, and jumps of 2 to 10 m that you can always go around
  • Abseils on a rope near the waterfalls, 6 m at most in the Gorges du Loup
  • Swimming from one pool to the next, at the foot of the limestone walls
  • Approach walk of 20 minutes at most on our family canyons

You do not have to decide alone: the canyon is chosen when you book, according to the weather, and it is most often the Gorges du Loup. The day before, we check the water flow and the sky, then confirm the meeting point by text message.

We go from 1 April to 31 October. The best time is June to September: the water is at 19 °C in summer. If conditions are not right, postponing costs you nothing.

Var and Verdon

Canyoning in the Var or the Verdon?

There is no canyoning in the Var or the Verdon with us: all our descents take place in the Alpes-Maritimes, where we have been working since 2013. That is why the drive from Fréjus takes about 1 hour.

Are you staying near Castellane? Our closest route is Saint-Auban, 30 minutes away; see our page on canyoning near Castellane. Staying elsewhere in the Var? See our page on canyoning from the Var, or those on canyoning in Saint-Raphaël, Saint-Tropez and Toulon.

Coming from Fréjus

How do you get there from Fréjus, and how long does it take?

Via the A8 then Grasse, allow about 1 hour to the Gorges du Loup. The meeting point depends on the canyon: after the tunnel, in the gorge, on the D6, for the Loup canyon; after the village of Gréolières, on the road to Andon, for the Gours du Ray. Gréolières is 1 h 10 from Fréjus. The exact GPS point reaches you by text message the day before.

In the Gorges du Loup, a half day takes up about 4 h 30, including the drive. For a full day, allow 4 hours on site and bring a picnic; the drive then depends on the canyon.

No car? Book a ride-hailing service: we do not run any shuttle from Fréjus or from the rest of the coast.

Your day

What to do with the rest of the day?

Our customers come for the day: after the canyon, they enjoy the valley, with swimming, walks, hilltop villages and good restaurants.

In the Loup valley

Swim or walk in the Gorges du Loup, then go up to see the hilltop village of Gourdon. Higher up, the Cheiron is good for walking.

Ask us for a recommendation on the day of your trip: we are happy to suggest a table in Gréolières or Coursegoules.

And back in Fréjus

The Roman amphitheatre and Saint-Léonce Cathedral await history lovers.

Families and groups

With the family or in a group from Fréjus

With children, from age 8

On holiday in Fréjus, the half day is the family trip: from age 8, provided you can swim and feel at ease in the water. Jumps remain optional, and the instructor sets the pace to suit the youngest.

What you need to know before coming with them is on our family canyoning page; if none of you has ever done it, also read beginner canyoning.

With friends, hen or stag party

A trip opens on your date from 5 people; from 15 July to 31 August, 4 are enough, provided a 5th person signs up. If there are two or three of you, we place you on a trip that is already organised. Each instructor leads 8 people at most.

For a hen or stag party, you can book the trip privately: see our pages on hen and stag parties in Nice and hen and stag parties in the Var.

On the day

How does a canyoning trip work?

From the meeting point back to the car, your state-qualified guide stays with you. Here are the four stages of the trip.

Meeting point & equipment

The instructor meets you at the point given by text message. Everyone puts on their 5 mm wetsuit, helmet and harness.

Safety briefing

How to jump, how to hold the descender, which signals to use when the water drowns out your voice. Simple words, no jargon.

Approach walk

20 minutes at most on our family canyons to reach the start, enough to warm up before getting in the water.

Descent and return

Slides, pools and abseils at the group's pace. You then get changed before heading back to Fréjus.

Jumps are always optional, and nobody forces you: the instructor goes first, shows you how, then helps you at each passage. At the Gours du Ray and in the Gorges du Loup, the abseils can be avoided too; this is not the case in all canyons.

In your bag, pack swimwear, old closed-toe trainers, a towel and a change of clothes. If you do not have suitable shoes, we can lend you some free of charge. It is all on our what to wear for canyoning page. Also tell us, before you set off, if the water worries you or if you have a health problem.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about canyoning near Fréjus

Canyons, Var, river hiking, drive, prices, age, swimming, safety, equipment, season, duration, combo.

Where can you go canyoning near Fréjus?

In the Alpes-Maritimes. The closest of our canyons is the Gorges du Loup canyon, about 1 hour from Fréjus; the Gours du Ray and the Courmes Waterfalls are in the same valley. Next come the Estéron (Riolan, Clue d'Aiglun, Saint-Auban), the Tinée (Cramassouri) and the Vésubie (Imberguet).

The canyon for your trip is chosen when you book, according to the weather: most often it is the Gorges du Loup.

Are there canyons in the Var around Fréjus?

We do not offer any trips there: all our descents take place in the Alpes-Maritimes. We do not go to the Verdon either; our closest route is Saint-Auban, 30 minutes from Castellane.

Can you go river hiking near Fréjus?

No, we do not offer it: what we do is canyoning. The closest thing is our discovery half day, from age 8: slides, optional jumps, swimming in the pools and a few guided abseils, which can be avoided at the Gours du Ray and in the Gorges du Loup.

How long is the drive from Fréjus?

About 1 hour to the Gorges du Loup, via the A8 and Grasse. The Gours du Ray is after the village of Gréolières, itself 1 h 10 from Fréjus. The GPS point for the meeting place is sent to you by text message the day before.

How do you get there from Fréjus without a car?

The meeting point is on site, in the gorge or after Gréolières, and we have no shuttle from the coast: without a car, you will need a ride-hailing service.

How much does a canyoning trip near Fréjus cost?

The discovery half day costs €55 per person, equipment included, and €50 from 5 people. The full day costs €80. A private trip costs €400 or €640, the optional video €30, and the combo €190.

Nothing to pay in advance: you pay on site, after the activity.

At what age can you start canyoning?

From age 8 as a half day, at the Gours du Ray, in the Gorges du Loup or at the Cramassouri. The full day is for ages 16 to 70, on our sporty canyons. In all cases, you must be able to swim.

Do you need to be able to swim to go canyoning?

Yes, with no certificate required, and you must accept having your head under water, because some pools have to be swum across before you reach the exit. If you are not at ease in the water, this is not the activity for you.

Is canyoning dangerous?

It is an outdoor sport, and it is the guiding that reduces the risks: with a state-qualified guide, the weather and the water flow are checked before each trip, the anchors checked and the equipment inspected. The risks and precautions are detailed on our is canyoning dangerous? page.

What equipment should you bring, and which shoes?

We provide the technical equipment: 5 mm neoprene wetsuit, helmet, harness, lanyard, descender and canyoning bag. You bring your swimwear, a towel and dry clothes for the journey back.

On your feet, old closed-toe trainers or water shoes with a thick sole, for a good grip on the rock: no sandals or flip-flops. If you do not have any, we can lend you some free of charge.

Best day out, we did paragliding and then the canyoning. Great value for money and our instruction was excellent we always felt very safe. I have done canyoning in a few countries and this was the best I have done by far. It was a beautiful gorge and had the clearest water. We would book again if we ever came back to the area for sure!
