The canyons

Where can you go canyoning from Toulon?

Three levels of route in the Préalpes d'Azur, from family slides to big sporting descents — the Gorges du Loup about 1h45 from Toulon.

Initiation · from 8 years

Gours du Ray

Our signature canyon, perfect for a First family experience. Natural water slides, optional little jumps and swimming in crystal-clear pools.

All levels, from 8 years old. The most spectacular setting in the region for beginners.

Discovery · Sensations

Gorges du Loup

The classic route in the Alpes-Maritimes, near Gourdon. Waterfalls, abseils up to 6 m and optional jumps in unspoilt surroundings.

A complete outing to experience all the sensations of canyoning, with no technical prerequisites.

Sporty · day

The deep canyons

To go further: the Courmes waterfalls and their 60-metre abseil, the Riolan and its two amphitheatres, or the Clue d'Aiglun.

Linked rappels, technical passages and awe-inspiring scenery for thrill-seekers.

  • Natural slides and optional jumps (from 2 to 10m) into turquoise pools
  • Guided abseils along the waterfalls, up to 6 m on the discovery route
  • Swim in crystal-clear waters between the limestone cliffs of the Préalpes d'Azur
  • The wild setting of Gorges du Loup, near the perched village of Gourdon
  • An approach walk of 20 minutes at most in the Mediterranean forest

From Toulon, allow about 1h45 to the Gorges du Loup, the great classic of the Alpes-Maritimes. The canyon is confirmed by text message the day before, depending on the water flow.

These canyons are also within reach from the rest of the Var: people come from Fréjus, Saint-Tropez or Hyères. The outing is easily extended with a stop in the hilltop villages of the Loup valley. They are just as easy to reach from Saint-Raphaël, next door to Fréjus.

The season runs from April to October, with water being the most pleasant in the height of summer. Fancy a change? The paragliding + canyoning combo Combine a flight and descent in the same day.

It’s the water that makes all the difference: turquoise, crystal-clear and sometimes cool, it transforms every pool into a natural swimming pool and every slide into a life-size water slide. Between tackling the technical sections, you can take the time to swim, admire the rock sculpted by the floods and enjoy the silence that only the gorges can offer. A timeless escape, just a few kilometres from the hustle and bustle of the coast.

One question comes up often: when is the water at its most pleasant? In high summer (July-August) it warms up and the flow settles, the ideal time for families; in spring and early autumn, the 5 mm wetsuit makes all the difference and lets you enjoy quieter gorges, away from the summer crowds. Either way, the guide confirms the trip the day before, based on flow readings and the weather.

In the canyon

Slides, jumps into the pools and abseils under the waterfalls: a preview of what awaits you, led by a state-qualified guide. Video of your outing as an option (€30), sent to your phone.

From the very first pool, it's a total immersion: the turquoise water, the coolness of the neoprene, the echo of the limestone walls. Your guide goes first over each obstacle to show you the technique, then accompanies you step-by-step — jumps always remain optional, the pace adapts to the group. The photos taken during the descent are the best way to relive the adventure and share it with your loved ones.

On the day

How does a canyoning trip work?

A simple and reassuring route, supervised from A to Z by your state-certified guide. The canyon is confirmed by SMS the day before, depending on the weather and water flow.

Meeting point & equipment

Check-in at the car park confirmed by SMS, then donning the 5mm wetsuit, helmet, and harness – everything is provided.

Safety briefing

Jumping position, using the descender, communication signals. No jargon, just practical advice.

Approach walk

20 minutes at most on half-day canyons, to reach the start, time to warm up and admire the Pre-Alps.

Descent and return

Toboggans, optional jumps and abseils to the rhythm of the band, then back to the car park and debriefing.

First slide, first thrills: your guide goes first to show you the technique, then stays with you at every obstacle. Jumps are always optional — you can go round if you prefer — and the pace adapts to the group. No experience is needed: you just need to be able to swim and be comfortable in the water. Afterwards, you get changed and share your impressions; the video of the outing, available as an option (€30), is sent to your phone.

As for what to bring, it’s nothing complicated: just make sure you have a swimsuit to wear under your wetsuit, an old pair of closed-toe trainers that won’t mind getting soaked, a towel, and some dry clothes for the journey home. There’s no need to bring any specialist kit – we provide everything. Just remember to let the guide know about any specific concerns (fear of water, health issues): the trip is always tailored to the group, never the other way round.

Best day out, we did paragliding and then the canyoning. Great value for money and our instruction was excellent we always felt very safe. I have done canyoning in a few countries and this was the best I have done by far. It was a beautiful gorge and had the clearest water. We would book again if we ever came back to the area for sure!
