On the French Riviera, paragliding can be done almost all year round. This is one of the great advantages of our region: between the Mediterranean Sea and the peaks of the Prealps. Grasse, the air is mild, the sky often clear – over 250 flyable days a year – and our flying sites face due south.

Nonetheless, not all periods are the same. Depending on the season, the time of day, and the current weather, a flight can be very smooth or full of sensations, short and contemplative or long and ascending. Knowing when to fly means offering yourself the best of the French Riviera as seen from the sky.

Since 2013, at Gréolières, the Ailéments team has been introducing people to free flight over the Alpes-Maritimes. Our state-certified instructors (DEJEPS and BEES) know every mood of the site. Here, season by season, is how to choose the right moment – and understand the flight conditions that make the difference.

Year-round flights

Can you go paragliding all year round on the French Riviera?

Almost: the Mediterranean climate makes it possible to fly in all four seasons, which is not the case at every paragliding site in France. At Ailéments, we fly all year round except from January to mid-February.

Climate

A privileged Mediterranean climate

Mild winters, dry summers and exceptional sunshine: the French Riviera is one of the sunniest regions in France, with more than 250 flyable days a year. Flyable windows are frequent in every season, winter included: see our winter paragliding page.

Exceptional site

Gréolières, facing due south from 1,100 to 1,800 m

Our main site benefits from an ideal orientation: the sun warms the slope for much of the year and triggers the thermals. The sites closer to the coast take over depending on the wind regime.

Season by season

The best time to go paragliding

Each season has its own character, light, and feel. Here's how to choose based on what you're looking for.

Spring · March-June

The awakening of ancestries

Cool nights and warming days create strong temperature contrasts: ideal conditions for generating Thermal ascents. As we gain altitude, the flights get longer, and the Mercantour keeps its snow-capped peaks in the background. June, dry and stable, is perfect for long flights.

Summer · June-August

The season of sensations

This is the busiest period: powerful thermals and spectacular soaring flights. The midday heat makes the air more turbulent, so we favour flights early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Our advice: book in advance, summer slots go quickly.

Autumn · Sept-Nov

The Golden Season

The light turns golden, the air is soft and calmer, the crowds thin out. September and October often combine the most balanced conditions, ideal for a serene tandem flight as well as a prestigious sunset flight. A few rainy spells punctuate the season, but the windows remain superb.

Winter · Dec-Feb

The enchanting interlude

Contrary to popular belief, winter is lovely in Gréolières. High-pressure systems bring crystal-clear air and temperature inversions. The view becomes magical — the snow-covered Mercantour on one side, the sea on the horizon on the other. It’s also the season for ski flying. Our school does not fly from January to mid-February.

Flight time

What time of day should you fly?

The time of the flight is as important as the season. Throughout the day, the air changes character, and we adapt each takeoff accordingly.

Morning

The calm and stable air

In the morning, the air is generally at its gentlest. It's the perfect time for a gentle flight: ideal for a first tandem flight, families, children, or those who prefer to take in the scenery without being shaken about. A tandem flight leaves the flying to the instructor: you simply enjoy it.

Midday

Active thermals

The sun warms the slopes and triggers thermals. The air becomes more active: it's the window for upward flight, where you gain altitude and the flight is extended. Richer sensations, a more aerial flight.

Late afternoon

The golden light

The air calms again and the light is bathed in golden hues. It is the perfect time for a prestige flight, a longer one, to be savoured while facing the sunset over the bay. We will guide you to the slot that best suits your wishes.

Weather & Safety

What weather conditions are required for safe flying?

A good flight depends on a few simple parameters, which our instructors monitor closely before each take-off.

The wind

Force and direction

A moderate wind, ideally below 20 km/h and facing due south At Gréolières, it ensures a comfortable take-off and flight. If the wind is too strong, gusty or blowing in the wrong direction, we will have to postpone the flight.

Ancestries

The air that carries

Depending on the time of day and the season, the air rises more or less: this is what distinguishes a discovery flight from an ascent flight. To understand these mechanisms, discover Paragliding aerology above our landscapes.

The sky

Ceiling and visibility

A sufficient cloud base, little rain and good visibility are needed. Before each flight, we check detailed forecasts; you can also learn to read the paragliding weather with Meteoblue, one of the reference tools for paragliders.

One thing is certain: safety always comes first. The instructor decides on the day whether the conditions are right. If they are not, we postpone the flight without hesitation — never the slightest compromise. That is also what flying with Ailéments means: a small, friendly school with state-qualified instructors, helping people fly with confidence on the French Riviera since 2013.

Emotion

Prestige flight

For a longer and more contemplative experience, the prestige flight elevates the Autumn evenings and their golden light. Skiers, meanwhile, will attempt ski flying in winter.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about flight conditions

Everything you need to know before choosing your time to fly to the French Riviera.

Can you go paragliding in winter on the French Riviera?

Yes. Thanks to Gréolières’s south-facing aspect and the Mediterranean climate, winter often brings crystal-clear air and exceptional views, with the snow-covered Mercantour on one side and the sea on the other. Our school does not fly from January to mid-February; for the rest of the winter, many days remain flyable, and it is also the season for ski flying.

What is the best month for a tandem paragliding flight on the French Riviera?

There is no bad month, but the Spring (May-June) and the Autumn (September-October) bring together the most balanced conditions and the most beautiful light. Summer is ideal if you like sensations, provided you fly in the early morning or late in the day, when the air is milder.

What happens if the weather is bad on my flight day?

If the flight conditions are not met, we report your flight at a later date. Safety comes first: it is the State-diplomaed instructor who validates the conditions on the day, and a postponed flight is always preferable to a flight in poor conditions.

Do you need to book your flight well in advance?

During summer and on sunny weekends, slots get booked up quickly, so it's best to book in advance. In spring and autumn, booking is more flexible. In all cases, we will confirm your slot based on the predicted weather.

Which weather forecast should you check before going paragliding?

Paragliders rely on fine forecasts like Météoblue, which provide details of the wind, clouds and thermals. But don’t worry: at Ailéments, the team checks the conditions on the day itself, so you don’t need to make any preparations yourself.

What time of day is best to fly?

The morning and late afternoon offer the mildest and calmest air, perfect for a first flight, families and children. The Midday is reserved for more energetic flights, carried by thermal ascents, which allow gaining altitude and prolonging the flight.
