Marseille, the Phocaean city, is 2h15 from the reference site of the Préalpes d'Azur to discover the paragliding. From the town, you reach the site of Gréolières in the Azur Prealps, one of the best spots in the South.

Why go all the way up there? Because no site in the Var region offers such a gradient: 20 to 60-minute flights, ideal atmospheric conditions, and a panoramic view stretching from Mercantour to the Côte d’Azur coastline — see our page paragliding in the Var for the full comparison.

The round trip is done in a day, and the excursion combines very well with the canyoning near Marseille For a day’s ride: 100 % thrills. Ideally, make this the sporting highlight of a weekend on the Côte d’Azur.

At 2:15 am, Marseille is our furthest departure point—and that's precisely what makes it a lovely getaway: we leave the calanques to discover, for a weekend or a long day, the Prealps of Azur mountains. Once there, over 1,000m of elevation gain and flights of 10 to 60 minutes over the Cheiron ridges, the Gorges du Loup and the Mediterranean. A vertical interlude, the opposite of the Phocean coastline.

Take-off

Where to fly from Marseille?

To be perfectly honest: you don’t fly over the calanques. But at 2h15, Gréolières offers something no other site in the Var region does — real altitude and long flights.

Recommended site · 2h15

Gréolières site (1,800 m)

One of the best spots in the South: 20 to 60-minute flights, optimal conditions, school at the foot of the landing.

Route A8 then Grasse and the Wolf's Gorges — vineyards and perched villages along the way.

And in the Var itself?

Var sites: limited elevation gain

Le Mount Lachens It exists, but with 200-300 m of usable runway: too short for a real introductory flight.

Gréolières remains the best quality-to-distance ratio for the people of Marseille.

  • The Gorges du Loup, 700 m below
  • The hilltop villages The Préalpes d'Azur
  • La Mediterranean on the horizon, from Mercantour to the Côte d’Azur coastline
  • A different kind of calanques spectacle — but flights of 20 to 60 minutes

Why drive all the way to the 06 area when you’ve got the open sea on your doorstep? Because no spot near Marseille offers the same wind conditions as Gréolières: a south-facing aspect, sea-to-mountain breezes and over 250 flyable days per year. The elevation change, which can't be found on the coast, transforms a simple jump into a real navigation over the ridges — accessible to beginners as well as to those who want to learn to fly later on. This is what justifies the journey and makes so many Marseillais return season after season.

Given the distance, many use it as an excuse for a Weekend on the French Riviera the morning, then beaches, hilltop villages or a canyon descent in the hinterland. Carpooling among Marseilles students is made easy, and a meeting point on the motorway allows for group departures. Enthusiasts in the area of Cassis or La Ciotat who also join us regularly, either alone or in groups.

Driving 2 hours and 15 minutes for a few minutes of flying? Think again: most people from Marseille turn it into a real experience, as a couple, with family or friends, and many turn it into a gift — for birthdays, Christmas, or stag and hen parties. The most enthusiastic then return for a 5-day course with partner accommodation at Gréolières, and progress from their first flight to flying solo. No experience is required to get started: the instructor takes care of everything; all it takes is a few running steps at take-off. And as the session is confirmed the day before depending on the weather, you’ll never have to drive all the way down the motorway for nothing — rescheduling is free, and payment is made on the spot once you’re back on solid ground.

Upon arrival, the change of scenery is total: under the wing, the ridges of Cheiron, the Gorges du Loup, and, in the distance, the Mediterranean unfurl – the sea rediscovered, but seen from above and from the mountain side. The onboard camera, held by your instructor, captures the big jump, the turns over the landscape, and the gentle landing. An HD memory to relive and share once you're back in the "Phocaean city" (Marseille).
