Paragliding, a sport accessible from day one

The most common misconception is that paragliding is reserved for seasoned sportsmen and women or those who enjoy extreme sensations. The reality is quite different. Paragliding is a free-flight discipline that is accessible to the vast majority of people in good general physical condition - you don't need to be an athlete.

During the introductory course, everything is progressive: you start with ground training, inflating the wing and taking your first steps on the training slope. The first flights are made at low altitude, always supervised by a qualified paragliding instructor, with a radio headset for real-time corrections. Autonomy comes naturally, step by step.

Do I need any pre-requisites to get started?

No experience. You don't need any previous flying experience or theoretical training. All you need is to be in good health, have no major medical contraindications and be keen to learn. Everything else is learned during the course, under the guidance of the instructor.

At what age can you start paragliding?

Paragliding can be learnt from the age of 14-15 for solo courses, with parental consent. For the tandem paragliding experience, It's possible from the age of 6. There is no upper age limit - the main thing is to be in good physical condition.

«Learning to fly is first and foremost learning to read the mountains. Here in the Alpes-Maritimes, every breeze tells a story. That's what we pass on first and foremost.»

The four steps to learning to paraglide

Paragliding training follows a structured path, validated by the Fédération Française de Vol Libre (FFVL). Each stage has its own objectives and pace, and prepares you for the next.

Stage 1 - Discover the thrill of a tandem first flight

Before committing to a placement, many people choose to start with a first paragliding experience tandem flight. You fly in tandem with a qualified instructor, with no piloting required. It's an opportunity to test the sensations, to understand what it's like to take off and land, and to confirm that paragliding is for you. Ailéments offers several packages: from 15 to 20 minute discovery flight at prestige flight of 45 to 60 minutes for those who want to enjoy the thermals of the Cheiron massif for longer.

Stage 2 - The introductory course (5 days) for first solo flights

This is the heart of the learning process. Over 5 days, you'll learn how to inflate the wing, control its direction on the ground, take off and land safely on the school slope, and then make your first big solo flights. The programme alternates theory (weather, aerology, paragliding equipment) with intensive practice in the field. By the end of the course, most students have completed between 20 and 40 flights. All the information on the Ailéments courses are available on the website.

Stage 3 - The progression course to consolidate your driving skills

This second 5-day course focuses on flying techniques: managing thermals, flying in a variety of conditions and precision landings. This is the stage that transforms a beginner into a pilot who is starting to fly with ease on a variety of sites.

Stage 4 - Initial certification and full autonomy

The initial pilot licence (issued by the FFVL) validates that you can fly alone, in complete safety, on approved sites. It is generally obtained after the progression course, depending on the progress of each student. It's not an end in itself - it's the starting point for independent paragliding.

All your questions about learning to paraglide

What's the difference between a baptism and an introductory course?
The introductory course is a two-seater discovery flight with an instructor - you don't fly, you live the experience. The introductory course (5 days) is where you learn to fly alone, from the ground to your first big solo flight. These are two different things: one is a leisure activity, the other is the start of a complete training programme.
In practice, you should expect two 5-day courses minimum (initiation + progression). The total time in months depends on your availability and the weather conditions. Some students obtain their licence in one season, others spread it over two years. There's no time pressure.
Paragliding is a supervised activity with a controlled level of risk, practised in a paragliding school with a state-certified instructor, using equipment that has been approved and checked by Aerotech. Most accidents occur when paragliding independently, outside the school, in unsuitable conditions. On a course, every flight is prepared, supervised and debriefed.
This is not recommended. Choosing the right glider for your weight, body shape and level is a technical matter. Unsuitable equipment slows progress. École Ailéments provides calibrated equipment for each student.
As a general rule, the maximum weight is around 95 kg for a tandem first flight. For a solo course, the introductory gliders cover most profiles. A phone call to the school will validate your situation if you are over this limit.
The FFVL licence is not legally obligatory to fly, but it is strongly recommended: it includes civil liability insurance and allows access to approved sites. Ailéments instructors can help you with this process as soon as you have obtained your licence.
Yes, with the exception of January (Ailéments annual closure). High season runs from April to October at Gréolières. In winter (December to the end of February), some flights are possible from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, landing on the Golfe Bleu beach, for a unique sea-view experience outside the seaside season.
Days lost for weather reasons are postponed, never lost. Every evening at 8pm, the team takes stock of the situation for the following day and warns you by SMS. The flexibility of the Ailéments flying sites (Gréolières, Gourdon, Roquebrune, depending on the conditions) means that we can fly the vast majority of the days scheduled.
